Portuguese Tarts Recipe

Portuguese Tarts Recipe

 

Ingredients

 

1 Level Tablespoon Cornflour
1.5 Cups Milk
½ Cup White Sugar
2 Level Tablespoons Plain Flour
1 Level Tablespoon Butter, Melted
4 Whisked Eggs
1 Packet Filo Pastry (5-10 sheets)
1 Teaspoon Natural Vanilla Essence

 

 

Equipment:

 

            2 Muffin Trays (18 tarts total)
            Medium sized Saucepan
            Small Bowl
            Pastry Brush
            1 Drinking Glass

 

Method:

 

  1. Pour Milk and Sugar into Saucepan
     
  2. Boil, then remove from heat.
     
  3. Whisk Eggs in Bowl
     
  4. Sift Plain Flour and Cornflour into Egg mixture
     
  5. Squash out any lumps with the back of a spoon
  6. Allow Saucepan to cool, then Add Egg mixture
  7. Reduce to low heat, then Stir mixture for 3 min or until Thick
     
  8. Remove mixture from heat
     
  9. Melt Butter into warm mixture
     
  10. Lightly grease Muffin Trays
     
  11.  Preheat oven to 250°C (500°F )
     
  12.  Microwave a small amount of Butter in the Drinking Glass
     
  13.  Unroll Filo Pastry on a Flat Surface
     
  14.  Brush Pastry, one sheet at a time until moist with Butter
     
  15.  Tear sheet irregularly into small pieces like paper
     
  16.  Poke pieces into Muffin Tray, to form Cups for each Tart
     
  17.  Use 3-4 Sheets thickness for the Base of each Cup
     
  18.  Spoon individual globs of Custard into each Cup
     
  19.  Use the Pastry Brush to paint in the sides of each Cup towards the Centre
     
  20.  Place trays in oven at 250°C (500°F ) for 30mins
     
  21.  Tarts are cooked when Golden Brown on Top
